Fraunhofer-Institute für Zurverlässigkeit und Mikrointegration (IZM) that belongs to Fraunhofer‐Gesellschaft is one of the leading institutes worldwide in packaging and microsystem integration and is able to provide photonic/electronic microsystems with advanced technologies on board and wafer level.
Contribution to PoC-BoSens: IZM has a broad experience in photonic packaging and laser processing technologies since 15 years. Such capabilities will be exploited in order to contribute to the development of reliable and robust packaged photonic sensors.
MDX is concentration on the development, industrialisation and production of micro-/ high precision injection moulding parts such as medical devices, diagnostic disposables or microfluidic disposables. The production by micro- /injection moulding, incl. tooling, automation, prototypes, qualification and validation for medical devices, diagnostic, pharma and biotech industry as well as for the microsystem technology.
Contribution to PoC-BoSens: The MDX work is mainly related to microfluidics that includes the design, engineering & flow simulation, tooling & production (incl. bonding and surface activation if requested) of fluidic prototypes.
IfU Diagnostic Systems GmbH (IFU)
The strategy of IfU Diagnostic Systems GmbH (IFU) is the development of special physical measurement techniques for applications in plasma technology and environmentally relevant analyses. IFU has particular expertise in development of optical components and construction of minispectrometers in UV/VIS/NIR-range and integration of measuring technology into the complete system.
Contribution to PoC-BoSens: IFU brings its capabilities for the design and development of the electronics, hardware and software for a portable readout device. Additional skills in ultra-fast analog signal processing for small optical signals as well as experience gained in different spectroscopy applications can be incorporated.
DIARECT AG, a privately held company founded in November 1998, specializes in the production and worldwide distribution of key components for development of diagnostic end products. These crucial components can be proteins, nucleoproteins and nucleic acids that are used as antigens in diagnostic test kits for the diagnosis of autoimmune and tick-borne disease.
Contribution to PoC-BoSens: DIARECT’S role is the establishment and validation of assays for the determination of cytokines. These assays will be transferred to the photonic sensing platform.
SCIENION (SCI) is a life science company well positioned in the markets of ultra-low volume liquid handling systems and microarray technologies. We provide our customers with an integrated product portfolio facilitating and improving multiplex analysis, high throughput screening and high throughput production of microarrays in the genomics and proteomics fields – from early research to manufacturing.
Contribution to PoC-BoSens: SCI is the main responsible for the development of biofuncionalization protocols in order to activate the biocompatibility and biorecognition of the sensor surface.
AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH
AIT as Austria’s largest non-university R&D institution participates through the competence unit Molecular Diagnostics of the Health & Bioresources center. The diagnostic biosensor team has a strong know-how in simulation, design and characterization of integrated-optical waveguide devices for sensing applications as well as hands-on experience in the implementation of testing set-ups. Moreover, AIT has a strong expertise in functionalization of waveguides for biosensing.
Contribution to PoC-BoSens: AIT is the responsible for the design of the integrated waveguide based platform and will exploit its expertise in designing biosensors to build a reference platform. Additionally, AIT will contribute with its biochemical know-how to support the according development and further increase the sensitivity of the photonic sensors.
Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (SSSA)
Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (SSSA) is a public academic institution located in Pisa, Italy. It is organized in 6 institutes, among which is the Institute of Communication, Information and Perception Technologies (TeCIP). TeCIP and SSSA through InPhoTec provide fabrication facilities and technology platforms for research, prototyping, and production of high added-value components to academia and SMEs.
Contribution to PoC-BoSens: SSSA's activities will be the fabrication of an integrated photonic circuit which is at the heart of the novel diagnostic system proposed in the project. SSSA will provide its expertise in the fabrication and integration of photonic devices. SSSA will also contribute to devise innovative packaging and the assembly strategies for the photonic section of the diagnostic system.
SYEL S.R.L. Industrial Automation & Electronics Systems
Syel srl (SYEL) is a private company that works in the field of automation and industrial electronics in different sectors including the medical one. SYEL offers a wide range of electronic components such as PLC, position single controllers or multi-axis (CN) and CNC. Regarding the biomedical field, SYEL produces intelligent electronic parts for the motion of machines for analysis, blood cell counter and automatic analyzers.
Contribution to PoC-BoSens: The Syel work is mainly focused on the implementation of active fluidic components and end-user interface for the readout system. Syel will also contribute to define the load mechanism of the cartridge.
Unitive Design and Analysis Ltd.
Unitive Design and Analysis Ltd (UDA) are a London-based SME, specialising in system design and prototyping engineering in the Medical Device and Biotechnology industries. Our team have a long history with imaging and sensing across the whole electromagnetic spectrum in medical imaging and wider markets. UDA regularly works with medical product designers at any, and all, stages from early design to market readiness.
Contribution to PoC-BoSens: UDA are delighted to be working with the consortium to deliver a Point of Care Diagnostic System demonstrator. We are contributing our systems development and design expertise, along with our experience of design for compliance, to ensure coherence across the entire system and system interfaces.
